Bron: The Disneyblog
Someone at Disney has leaked what appears to be very real blueprints laying out all the new ‘attractions’ planned for an expanded Fantasyland at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. This plan matches what I’ve heard from other sources. My gut tells me it’s not something fan created and is actually from the halls of WDI in Glendale. Now the question is, has all this been approved for construction? If so we should start seeing bulldozers pushing dirt as soon as October. I won’t believe any of this is true until we do.

So what will the expanded area consist of? It remakes everything from where the current Little Mermaid meet and greet is, moves Dumbo, and goes back to the service road all the way across to the existing Toon Town Fair tents. The only attraction that will remain from the existing Toon Town is Goofy’s Barnstormer. Dumbo will now be located across from the Barnstormer and will be expanded to two spinners doubling the capacity of that popular attraction.

The rest of the expansion is dedicated almost entirely to the Pixie’s and Princesses that has become the marketing and merchandising focus of the Walt Disney Company the last few years. There are three new meet and greets Pixie Hollow is expanded, Cinderella gets a larger meet and greet, Princess Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty) also gets a spot. I think calling a meet and greet an attraction is a bit of a stretch, but there are ways to expand the experience and elevate it to attraction level. Let’s hope that’s in the budget.

Ariel, the Little Mermaid has a meet and greet too, but she also gets a whole new attraction (essentially a clone of what is now under construction in California). It looks like Belle gets a meet and greet and a new “Be Our Guest” restaurant. At one time there was a Dinner Theatre restaurant by that name planned for Disneyland Paris, I wonder if they’re reviving that concept. That’s certainly something the Magic Kingdom has been lacking and I can see the long lines forming now for reservations.

What’s missing from the earlier rumors? One more roller coaster for the area. There was supposed to be a Snow White Mine Ride. Although I’m glad they’re not building that if it meant removal of the existing Snow White attraction. Perhaps Goofy’s Barnstormer will get rethemed to the Mine Ride.

My thoughts on this plan? It’s exactly what I would expect Disney World to come up with as an answer to Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Disney is essentially writing off the tween boys and focusing all their attention on the girls with the idea that moms and their daughters control the vacation purse strings.

There’s only so much you can tell from a blueprint (assuming this is the final version). But I like what I see if that’s Disney’s choice. I would have liked to see a bit more balance and, perhaps, a new C or D ticket as well. I’m also curious to see if the rest of Fantasyland gets a retheming as well.

Klik

* Visit their favorite Disney Princess in her castle, cottage, or chateau to share a dance with Cinderella; celebrate Sleeping Beauty’s birthday with the Good Fairies; or join Belle in an enchanting story performance in the Beast’s castle library.
* Be Our Guest and dine in one of three enchanted rooms inside the Beast’s castle.
* Fly with Dumbo high above brand new circus grounds, twice the size of the existing attraction with a new interactive, three-ring circus tent.
* Journey under the sea with Ariel, The Little Mermaid, in her very own attraction – also opening at Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim in 2011.
* Meet Tinker Bell and her friends in the magical world of Pixie Hollow.

Fantasyland expansion begins at Disney

Walt Disney World has officially broken ground on the largest expansion in the history of the Magic Kingdom. The expansion of Fantasyland is scheduled to be completed in 2013.

The project will nearly double the size of Fantasyland and include a new, lavish ride based on the Little Mermaid.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo made the announcement in September of last year. Analysts predict the expansion will re-ignite travel to Orlando, which has lagged in the global recession.

The groundbreaking comes at a time when Universal Orlando is putting the finishing touches on The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, expected to open sometime within the next three months.

Disney's parks are a major profit center for the entertainment giant, contributing about a third of the company's revenue.

The biggest addition will be the Little Mermaid attraction, based on Disney's 1989 movie of the same name.

Plans call for an enclosed ride that will carry guests through the underwater realm of Ariel -- the redheaded mermaid. It will use an Omnimover ride system similar to that of the Haunted Mansion, and will move through scenes featuring characters and songs from the movie.

The ride, which has a working title of Under the Sea: Journey of The Little Mermaid, will be the same as one being built as part of the $1 billion overhaul of Disney's California Adventure theme park in Anaheim, Calif., though the attractions will have different exteriors.

The Fantasyland overhaul will be completed in about two to three years. Disney declined to say how much it will spend on the projects. Princesses will also figure heavily in the renovation. As more and more details are released by the Mouse, it seems to lend credence to a blueprint of an expansion project which was reportedly leaked last summer and made its way to several blogs and theme park websites (see below), though there are a few minor differences.

Disney World will construct individual areas -- whether a castle, cottage or chateau -- where guests can interact with some of the company's best-known princesses and other characters from their movies. Children will be able to dance with Cinderella, celebrate Aurora's birthday with the Good Fairies at Sleeping Beauty's cottage, or play a role with Belle in a performance in the library of the Beast's castle.

Disney intends to relocate Dumbo the Flying Elephant to a new "circus grounds" that will include an interactive queue under a big-top tent to entertain children waiting in line. Disney will add a new Pixie Hollow character-greeting area, home to Tinker Bell and other fairies.

To accommodate the expansion, Disney will raze most of Mickey's Toontown Fair, the smallest of the Magic Kingdom's "lands." Gone will be both of the walkthrough country houses where guests were guaranteed to meet Disney's most famous characters: Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Disney says Mickey and Minnie will get new homes near the front entrance of the park. The children's roller coaster, the Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm, will remain, though it will be re-themed, likely with a circus overlay linking it to Dumbo.

New Little Mermaid Ride: Under the Sea with Ariel
While Disney hasn't announced many specifics, the E-Ticket ride, featuring the wonderful music and characters from the hit film, The Little Mermaid, will likely be similar, if not identical, to the ride coming to Disney's California Adventure. If so, its rumored $100 million budget should make this a marquee attraction. The Little Mermaid Ride will likely use an Omnimover system and "clammobile" cars that will be similar to the ones found at The Seas with Nemo and Friends ride at Epcot.

Beauty and the Beast Land
Cinderella won't have the only castle in Fantasyland. While it won't surpass the elegant spires of the classic castle at the end of Main Street U.S.A., the Beast will take up residence in the neighborhood and add his castle to the property tax rolls. The Beauty and the Beast adventure will begin at Belle's village when guests visit her father's cottage. A magic mirror will transport guests to the Beast’s castle where they will have an opportunity to retell the Beauty and the Beast story by performing it for Belle. Hungry thespians will then be able to dine in the elegant, 552-seat Be Our Guest restaurant inside Beast’s castle or grab a quick bite at Gaston’s Tavern. There's no word how guests will be able to magically transport themselves out of the Beast’s castle. Perhaps buying a trinket in the gift shop will do the trick.

A Jumbo-Sized Dumbo
Dumbo the Flying Elephant may be the most frustrating ride in all of Walt Disney World. No visit to the theme park mecca is complete without a ride on the charming, classic, big-eared elephant. For that very reason, there is typically a jumbo-sized line to endure just to take a 90-second spin on the spinning ride. Disney plans to tackle the rat-maze-hell problems with two improvements: A second Dumbo platform will double the capacity of the ride, and the queue will snake through a big-top circus tent complete with interactive games to entertain guests.

Tinker Bell's Pixie Hollow
This new attraction will likely be the last to debut, probably in 2013. Similar to the walk-through attraction at Disneyland (although it appears that the Florida version may be larger and offer more features), Pixie Hollow will shrink visitors down to itsy-bitsy size so that they can walk past giant blades of grass and meet Tinker Bell and her pixie friends. Not coincidentally, Disney recently created a Disney Fairies video and merchandise line. Hey kids! Can you say "synergy?"

The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
It will take guests on a rollicking, musical ride into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.” The coaster will feature a first-of-its kind ride system with a train of ride vehicles that swing back and forth, responding to every twist and turn of the track. The journey will be accompanied by music from the classic Disney film and animated figures of Snow White and the Dwarfs.

Princess Fairytale Hall
Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel, will greet guests in their new home, an elegant royal court on the site where Snow White’s Scary Adventures stands today

Storybook Circus
The classic Barnstormer gets a bright new look as well, featuring Goofy as The Great Goofini. It’s a twisting, turning roller coaster “flight” high above the circus fun

Filmpje vanuit de lucht:
Prince Charming

As with any project of this scale, we’ve also continued to look for additional ways to surprise and delight our guests and I think you’ll be pleased. One opportunity we’re especially excited about is the chance to tell Snow White’s story in a fresh new way. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will take you on a rollicking, musical ride into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.” The coaster will feature a first-of-its kind ride system with a train of ride vehicles that swing back and forth as they whisk along the track. The journey will be accompanied by music from the classic Disney film and animated figures of Snow White and the Dwarfs.
Our other Disney princesses will also be getting a new home (actually, they prefer to call it a castle) in the all new Princess Fairytale Hall. Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel, will greet you in an elegant royal court at the location where Snow White’s Scary Adventures is today. This new experience will be in place of some of the earlier plans we shared regarding opportunities to interact with your favorite princesses.
And Tinkerbell and her fairy friends will be joining the cast at Epcot where they will have special roles bringing the flora and fauna to life during the Flower and Garden Festival.
The New Fantasyland will be constructed in phases with most new experiences open by 2013. We look forward to sharing more with you as our work progresses.

"Our other Disney princesses will also be getting a new home (actually, they prefer to call it a castle) in the all new Princess Fairytale Hall. Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel, will greet you in an elegant royal court at the location where Snow White’s Scary Adventures is today. This new experience will be in place of some of the earlier plans we shared regarding opportunities to interact with your favorite princesses."

Walt Disney World said Tuesday it will build a new indoor roller coaster in the Magic Kingdom as part of its expansion of the theme park's Fantasyland section.

Dubbed "The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train," the moderately intense attraction will feature a first-of-its-kind ride system in which vehicles swing back and forth along a twisting track. The attraction will be set to music from the classic animated movie "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

The coaster is among several new elements Disney has added to its Fantasyland project, which was initially announced in September 2009 and is scheduled to open in phases beginning late next year. Company executives acknowledged last summer that they were redrawing parts of the original plan — which initially focused heavily on Disney's girl-centric princess and fairies franchises — to broaden the expansion's overall appeal.

As part of the revisions, Disney will scrap a pair of elaborately themed areas where guests could have danced with Cinderella or celebrated a birthday party with Sleeping Beauty's Aurora. Instead, those two characters will be given a new home together — along some of the company's other animated heroines — in a new set dubbed "Princess Fairytale Hall." The meet-and-greet area will replace one of Disney World's original attractions, "Snow White's Scary Adventure."

Disney said it will also devise a new circus theme for portions of Mickey's Toowntown Fair, which will close next month to make way for further Fantasyland construction. "Storybook Circus" will include "The Great Goofini," a rethemed version of the "Barnstormer" children's coaster. The area will also include a previously announced expanded version of the popular children's airborne-carousel ride "Dumbo the Flying Elephant," which will be moved from its current location in Fantasyland, doubled in size and given a new, games-filled queue for those waiting to get on.

Gone entirely are earlier plans for a fairy-themed area that Disney had originally said was to be called "Pixie Hollow." Disney said it will instead build a greeting area for fairies inside its Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park.

Some elements of the original Fantasyland expansion remain. Among them: "Under the Sea — Journey of the Little Mermaid," an indoor ride featuring an Omnimover motion system and singing animatronics. It will be identical to an attraction being built in Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim, Calif.

Also remaining in the updated plans is an elaborately themed, 550-seat restaurant dubbed "Be Our Guest." Based on the Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast," the restaurant will offer counter-service meals during the day and pricier, sit-down fare in the evenings. The area around the restaurant will also include a smaller eatery called "Gaston's Tavern"; a retail area called "Bonjour! Village Gifts"; and "Enchanted Tales with Belle," a cottage in which guests will be able to interact with the princess.

Disney formally unveiled details of the revised expansion Tuesday evening during a media event inside the Magic Kingdom. The event was timed to take advantage of the presence of scores of travel writers already in Central Florida for Wednesday's scheduled departure of a preview voyage aboard Disney's new $900 million cruise ship, the Disney Dream.

Disney also used the Tuesday event to unveil a central feature of its "Let the Memories Begin" advertising campaign: the projection of hundreds of photos taken by guests onto Cinderella Castle. Disney said the castle and Disneyland's "it's a small world" attraction will continue to feature such projections throughout 2011.
